After pimping Rewind, I wanted to have Rumble looking as fancy as his moldmate. To my surprise Toyhax also released an add-on set to make him ressemble the animation! So I binged and went for both.
Out of the box it looks pretty good I must say, if I hadn't seen the improved version I'd be quite alright with this one as it is.
The paint apps are good enough, and my complaint is more about the mold than Rumble in particular, but the arms could use some paint to separate kibble from arm mold. And the red gun gets lost in the chunky red arm.
As before, I think this is a great mold. Same as Rewind, this is a great travel toy, with compact alt mode and very poseable for the size that can show a lot of attitude.
Packaging is pretty standard, shows the 2 alt modes, and curiously, the model used on the back is actually a painted Rewind instead of a Rumble. A shame because I think Rumble's head sculpt is amazing and this was a lost opportunity.
So, the alt modes. Data pad mode, good basic as expected. The screen sticker here shows three panels with multiple diagrams. Opposite of Buzzsaw's, this one does not mimic a home screen but a bit of a dashboard or operation panel with bunch of stats.
Tank mode is the weak one here. Other than the tank threads, there is almost no paint or decoration here, making the whol top part just a big red square. Not too exciting. I found that with Rumble the gun attaches very tightly, unlike Rewind's.
The reprolabels set comes with 3 sheets, a gold one for the torso applications, a silver one for the gun and the main silver/metalic one with two data pad options, and even an alternative of the blue screen with a different button initials.
Application was easy, and removing the stock stickers was also too easy. They peeled straight away in one piece almost. So glad they're gone, because they were going to scratch off by themselves I'm sure.
Pimped up there are a few things that jump to attention on bot mode.
The color on the knees is a big improvement and the left overs of the casette in the side also make the legs pop a bit more when looked from angles. The colors resemble a lot the Masterpiece colors.
But I think the big attraction is the front torso and the golden stickers. The gold/metalic shine gives it a deluxe look and the additional crotch and decorated shoulders make the figure pop a lot more. The original Decepticon insignia is covered and a new one is provided for the abs, Also following the Masterpiece design.
This is what I wanted! The cassette mode! So happy with it! And there are extra stickers to mimic "Play" buttons.
Of course, there is also tank mode that also gets love. There are side stickers on the turret that break the big red brick that it was. Also the gun silver collar works pretty good here. The tiny but important front window?reflector? stickers on the top combine very well. Over all Tank mode doesn't suck anymore.
The add ons set comes packaged in this plastic foam with both cannons. They are not 3D printed and feel like solid plastic. It is a less malleable plastic than the toy's material so it may not support bending or stress like the standard toy does.
There are clips that connect perfectly on some gaps on Rumble's back. They feel pretty stable and have not fell off with movement yet. So the precision is spot on!
I wonder if they could have been silver instead of black to further ressemble animation. Maybe I end up painting them myself, but black does not look our of place.
This is the final look. Big improvement over the base look! It has a premium feel now,
The extra cannons have a place in tank mode. It looks like there was a small space ship on top of it, but it's alright. There is no place for them in data pad mode.
Both sets will cost you $18 before shipping. Considering this is a $10-$11 figure, be aware that now you have a $30 toy in your hand. Unlike Buzzsaw, I feel that there is more play value with Rumble, making the $30 price not as absurd, but still over the top. For the final value of both Rumble and Buzzsaw you may be better off buying the Masterpiece 16 set.
